Loot in the name of Organising Big Tournaments

Loot in the name of Organising Big Tournaments

Cricket in Kashmir has grown substantially over the period of time. No other state in India has seen the growth of local Cricket as such of Kashmir. The introduction of social media has also done the favour. But, what is the most surprising thing is the loot in the name of Cricket. Organizers all over Kashmir are charging huge money for knockout tournaments where a team only gets to play a single match if they lose. A team has to pay more than 5000 for that single match and teams are left no option except playing as the conditions are the same everywhere. It’s as if they dictate the terms here and till now, no one seems to have questioned them. No one asks them where this much money goes? They don’t prepare turf wickets nor they give much prize money on the final. A tournament of 64 teams with each team paying more than 5000 takes the amount to over 3 lakh and the prize money for both finalists is only 1 lakh.

One of North Kashmir’s famous cricketers Sajad Ahmad posted on his Facebook, ” How people in Kashmir have romanticized the beautiful game of cricket as he saw a player being contracted 35000 for just one tournament”. This is insane as the prize money on the final is only 70000. Which leaves the owner of the team in tantrums. This isn’t a single story in the valley, there are many such stories where the present and former state players do the same despite earning a good amount of money from BCCI tournaments. The money that should have been used to promote the local talent and make turfs is again given to the already earning Cricketers, making it tough for the local Cricket players and Cricket in general to survive.

A cricketer who remained anonymous said, the problem is in the system. No one keeps the check on these organizing bodies and if someone does, he is bribed or told different homemade stories to believe on the things. If an organizing body makes more than 3 lakh from the team for a single tournament that runs for 2 months but can only make a turf wicket that would only cost 50-60 thousand, why doesn’t anyone question them about this? Organizing bodies repeatedly open the tournaments, probably 3-4 tournaments in a year taking the revenue over 10 lakhs without the money from sponsors. Sponsors provide in lakhs too, where does that money go? In short, cricket which was once for the elites in England is returning to its roots throughout the lineage of Kashmir. A poor soul in Kashmir can play the game which he used to play for fun. This is plunder in the name of giving quality Cricket which is later on reflected in our national tournaments where the state doesn’t qualify for quarters because, for most of the year, state players are busy playing bet matches and local tournaments on mat wicket just for money. JKCA administration is also to be blamed for this as they should refrain contracted players from playing on mat wickets and in big money tournaments. Instead, they should organize regular tournaments for them on turf wickets at SKS Stadium and at other places where turf wickets are available.
