Defender always win matches for his team: Meet Noor Mohammad Beigh

July 28: When we look through the period of 1978-1988, great defenders emerged in the state. One such great player was Noor Mohammad Beigh.

Noor Mohammed was born at Haft Chinar Srinagar on 16 April 1959. He went to Govt High School Jawahar Nagar. He played football in childhood at Hazuri Bagh(Iqbal Bagh) and Bhakshi Stadium with other locality boys. He also played in the school team and participated many times at Inter-School Tournaments.

In 1978 he joined his first professional club of career Gousia FC Sarai Payeen. In 1979 he joined for six months Water Works Dept football team. Seeing his performance J&K Police offered him to join the dept and the team. In 1980 he joined the Police team.

Noor Mohammad was tall, smart, and fit footballer played as a stopper back. He was extremely talented and a good header. In defense, he was like a wall in the team. He was a quick and stamina based player. His physique was well- built. He observed opponents keenly and tackled brilliantly and snatched the ball easily. The police team became more strong and emerged as a powerhouse team of state when in 1982, five players from the Transport team joined the team, in the same year they won all the major tournaments in J&K. Noor Mohammad and Mohammad Lateef (International player) emerged as the strong and tough pair of defenders.

In 1982 Noor Mohammad played Rovers Cup (Mumbai) and the J&K Police team reached the Quarterfinals giving one of the best performances. In 1983 he played Durand Cup(Delhi). In 1984 he played All India Sher-e-Kashmir Gold Cup and Police team qualified for the finals but lost against Demo Sports, India’s top team, by 1-3. In 1986 Federation Cup, held at Srinagar, top clubs of India participated in it. Four clubs from the state played this Cup. Noor Mohammad performed brilliantly and the Police team reached Quarterfinals and defeated the strongest team Dempo FC by 1 goal. The Dempo team of that time comprised of 9 players that had been part of the Indian Football Team.

Noor Mohammad represented state thrice at Santosh trophy Bilaspur MP in 1986, Kolkata 1987, and Guwahati 1989. He played All India Police Football Meets many times. He played almost all the major tournaments in and outside the state.
He was a player of great caliber. For ten years he was a top defender in the state. People still remember his great game. He is a very humble and nice individual and a role model for youngsters.
